2007-2008 Design Scenario
April 12, 2008

Students interested in Interior Design must apply to Colorado State University and meet the criteria defined by the Office of Admissions. The program does not require a portfolio to declare the major and all students are eligible to select Interior Design on their university application. During the spring semester, a Design Scenario is conducted to seek the best prepared candidates for advancement to the upper level courses. In addition to the All University Core Curriculum/AUCC requirements, students should elect to take the two courses required to qualify for the Design Scenario (ID 129 and ID 166).

Frequently Asked Questions Concerning Interior Design, Design Scenario.
  • What is the Design Scenario?

The Design Scenario is a selective advancement evaluation conducted by the faculty of the Interior Design program in April for all students who are seeking to advance to the second year of the Interior Design program of studies. Demonstrated skills will assist the faculty in impartially determining a cohort of students, generally up to 40, who demonstrate the necessary basic skills required for successful study in the major. The skills that will be evaluated include writing, drawing, problem-solving, and conceptual frameworks. A minimum GPA of 2.5 is a requirement to participate in the Design Scenario.

  • Is a portfolio necessary to gain entrance into the Interior Design program?

To be accepted into the professional program, students must first pass the Design Scenario. The knowledge areas and skill development assessed during the Design Scenario are skills that students will acquire in their first year courses. A portfolio is only required for transfer students who do not live in state and can participate in the Design Scenario.
  • What courses are requirements for the Design Scenario?

ID 129 Introduction to Interior Design and ID 166 Visual Communication/Sketching are required for students who participate in the Design Scenario. Equivalent courses must be approved at least two weeks prior to the Design Scenario by the Interior Design transfer advisor .
  • Why can't anyone who wants to be in the program continue to the second year of studies?

The program is limited in terms of studio space and faculty therefore can only accept the number that would equal two studio sections.

  • Who can or should participate in the Design Scenario?

Any individual who has completed ID 129 Introduction to Interior Design and ID 166 Visual Communication/Sketching or their equivalent (as determined by the program transfer adviser or program coordinator) is eligible to participate in the scenario. One additional course, in the first year of the major, is required to be completed within one semester and prior to the start of the Spring 2009 semester - MC 151 Construction Materials and Methods.
  • What are we looking for from you as a result of the Design Scenario?

Work demonstrating an understanding of two and three-dimensional design, beginning drafting and orthographic projection, freehand drawing and illustration, space planning, three-dimensional thinking, writing skills, and general craftsmanship.
  • What if I have questions about the Design Scenario?

Before the Design Scenario, the department holds a meeting to discuss the requirements for the scenario and at that time, students will be given the opportunity to ask questions. Two Question and Answer sessions will be held prior to the 2007-2008 Design Scenario.

  • How will I be notified?

Students participating in the Design Scenario will be notified within 7 business working days from the date of the Design Scenario.
